The origin of Birra Morena began in 1999, when the Tarricone family were presented with the opportunity to take over the Drive Beer Brewery. The art of drink making was already in their DNA, with their ancestor Giuseppe Tarricone famed for producing excellent wine back in the early 1900s, but this would be a different challenge. For the five brothers, Giuseppe, Vito, Carlo, Federico and Fabrizio, the opportunity to return to their roots proved irresistible.

The Drive Beer Brewery is one of only a handful of wholly owned, independent breweries left in Italy and located in Basilicata, a rural region found to the south of the country. Nicknamed the instep of Italy, with breathtaking mountains and sleepy villages scattered throughout, the beauty of Basilicata inspired the Tarricone’s to create a beer to be savoured based on a recipe that only ever uses pure malted barley.

Today, Morena remains a 100% malt lager still entirely produced in Basilicata and imported into the UK exclusively by LWC.
